How To Fix Error 3194 Successfully

Are you stumped at figuring out how to solve Error 3194 that appears on your iTunes? Do you want to know how you can fix the problem and get back to using your iPhone, iPod, and iPad normally? I must say you’re in luck because I’ll share with you how to fix this annoying error.

iTunes Error 3194 – What Does It Mean

So, before I tell you how to fix error 3194 on your iTunes I’ll shed some light on what this error is all about. If you don’t already know, the iTunes error 3194 is quite a common error that iOS users have to face recently.

It is an error that sometimes occur when you try to restore the iOS on your iPhone, iPod, or iPad. And the main cause for it to happen is when you upload a custom jailbroken firmware to upgrade or downgrade your device’s iOS. When you upload a jailbroken firmware that is not recognized by the Apple firmware signing services on your iTunes, the firmware signing service blocks you from using the firmware thus resulting in you not being able to change the firmware on your Apple device.

For many Apple device users (meaning iPhone, Ipod, and iPad users), jailbreaking their device is a common choice. However, users who have jailbroken their device and would like to restore their firmware to stock or change it to the custom iOS 4.3.3 firmware very often encounter error 3194. This error is also often noticed to occur when users use Cydia to jailbreak their device, change the system host file to Cydia’s SHSH server, and later try to change the firmware version.

Fixing Error 3194

Fixing error 3194 is quite simple but you still need to pay attention to the steps. Since this problem is triggered when the Apple firmware signing services detects an unsigned custom firmware, a solution for it is to block the firmware signing service. Here’s how you do it:

1. First of all, exit iTunes.

2. After you have done that, you now have to locate your hosts file. You can find this file inC:\windows\system32\drivers\hosts.

3. Now, open the hosts file with Notepad. You need to have Administrator Privileges to edit this file so make sure you open Notepad with Administrator Privileges by right-clicking Notepad and select Run as Administrator.

4. At the bottom of the hosts file, one line below the last text, type in this; #74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com

5. Next, connect your device to your computer and launch iTunes.

6. Put your device into DFU Mode when it is connected to your computer. You do this by first turning off the device, then hold down the power and the sleep button for about 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, release the power button but keep holding down the home button until iTunes says that your device is in the recover mode.

7. Now, you can use iTunes to restore the iOS on your Apple device as usual.

8. After you have updated your iOS, in the hosts file which you have edited earlier remove the #71.208.105.171 gs.apple.com line that you added. This is to allow iTunes to perform updates as usual.

This method that I’ve shared with you is only temporary because in the end you have to restore the hosts file to its original state. That means, if you want to restore or downgrade your device iOS again in the near future with an unsigned firmware, you’ll have to repeat this process. However, there is a way to fix it easily without editing the hosts file yourself. For this, I’ll recommend to you a great registry cleaner.

Setup cannot continue. Power down or reboot your computer now.

You may also receive a “Stop 0x0000007B” error message during Windows XP Setup when the Setup program restarts during the installation process. When you receive a Stop error while the Setup program is running, you receive the second error message. To troubleshoot this issue, read the following four sections to determine if any one of the issues applies to you. If none of the issues apply to you, use the following general troubleshooting steps at the end of the article.

Boot-Sector Viruses

You may receive a “Stop 0x0000007B” error message if your computer is infected with a boot-sector virus. If the problem is intermittent and you can start Windows, check your computer for viruses. If you find a virus, also check any floppy disks for viruses before you use them again.

For a list of antivirus software manufacturers, click the following article number to see the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

49500 List of Antivirus Software Vendors

Note You may have to use more than one brand of virus-detection software to detect and remove various viruses.

Important If your computer has been infected, it may be open to additional forms of attack. We recommend that you rebuild infected Internet-facing servers by following the guidelines that are published on the CERTWeb site. Internet-facing servers are servers that function without a firewall or other protection. It is also a good idea to rebuild any other computers that are at risk because of their proximity to infected computers before you put them back in service.

If a virus has infected your Windows XP-based computer and a virus-detection program cannot remove the virus and repair the system, you must repartition and format your hard disk and reinstall Windows XP. For additional information about partitioning and formatting a hard disk with Windows XP, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Device Driver Issues

You may receive a “Stop 0x0000007B” error message in the following scenarios:

A device driver that the computer boot controller needs is not configured to start during the startup process.

A device driver that the computer boot controller needs is corrupted.

Information in the Windows XP registry (information related to how the device drivers load during startup) is corrupted.

Windows XP requires a miniport driver to communicate with the hard disk controller that is used to start your computer. If Windows XP does not supply a device driver for your controller or if Windows XP is using a corrupted or incompatible driver, you must replace the driver with a valid copy that is compatible with your controller and Windows XP.

During the first phase of the Windows XP installation, Setup displays the following message at the bottom of the screen:

Press F6 if you have to install a third-party SCSI or RAID driver.

Press F6 and then follow the instructions to install a mass-storage device driver from your Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). For additional information about using F6 to load an OEM device driver to support, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

314859 Limited OEM driver support is available with F6 during Windows XP Setup

To determine if your hard disk controller is compatible with Windows XP and to obtain information about drivers that are included on the Windows XP CD-ROM or that are available for download, see the latest Windows XP Hardware Compatibility List (HCL). For additional information about the latest Windows XP HCL, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

314062 The latest Windows XP hardware compatibility list

If your hard disk controller is not listed on the HCL, contact the manufacturer of your computer, system board, or hard disk controller for information about the availability of a driver. Microsoft does not guarantee that a resolution is available for non-HCL equipment. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

315239 Microsoft support policy for hardware that does not appear on the Windows HCL

If the System hive in the Windows XP registry is corrupted, Windows XP may not be able to load the miniport device driver that the boot controller requires. To resolve this issue, restore a registry backup. For additional information about restoring a registry backup, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

307545 How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

Hardware Issues

You may receive a “Stop 0x0000007B” error message if there is a resource conflict between the boot controller and another controller or between SCSI devices. You may also receive this Stop error message if drive translation is not being performed or if drive translation was changed. To troubleshoot this issue:

If an IRQ or I/O port address conflict exists between the boot controller and another controller, Windows XP either stops responding (hangs) or displays a “Stop 0x0000007B” error message. If you recently added new hardware, remove the new hardware or reconfigure it so that it does not conflict with the resources of any other installed controllers.

If you are using a SCSI hard disk, check the SCSI chain for correct termination. Remove any unused SCSI devices or make sure that each SCSI ID is unique.

Make sure that drive translation is turned on (if it is required) and that it has not been changed. For example, if you recently switched controllers, this issue may occur. For additional information about this issue, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

314082 You receive a Stop 0x0000007b error after you move the Windows XP system disk to another computer

Other Issues

Other potential causes of a “Stop 0x0000007B” error message include:

The boot volume is corrupted and cannot be initiated by Windows XP. If the file system is corrupted and if Windows XP cannot initiate the boot volume during the startup process, either move the drive to another computer that is running Windows XP and run the chkdsk command on that drive or try to create a parallel installation of Windows XP on the drive (in a separate folder). The Windows XP Setup program checks the integrity of the volume before it copies files, and it may fix some problems in the process.

You are installing Windows XP on a mirrored boot partition that was created by Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. Windows XP does not support Windows NT 4.0 Ftdisk volume sets. If you are running Microsoft Windows 2000, you must convert all Ftdisk volume sets to dynamic volumes before you upgrade to Windows XP. If you are running Windows NT 4.0, break any mirrors and back up all the data on the stripe, the RAID5, or the extended volume sets before you upgrade to Windows XP. Ftdisk sets might not be accessible after the upgrade.

General Troubleshooting

If none of the issues that have been described in this article apply to you, use the following general troubleshooting steps:

If you receive one of these error messages while you are installing Windows XP, update the computer BIOS or obtain Windows XP drivers for your hard disk controller (from the manufacturer of your computer, system board, or hard disk controller), or do both. For information about how to update your computer’s BIOS or obtain Windows XP drivers, contact your computer manufacturer. For additional information about the availability of drivers, see the Device Driver Issues section in this article.

Note: If Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 was installed previously on a mirrored boot partition, see the Other Issues section in this article.

Use the Last Known Good Configuration feature. This may resolve the problem if you recently installed an incompatible device driver for your boot controller. For additional information about using the Last Known Good Configuration feature, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

307852 How To start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration feature in Windows XP

Computer problems may seem immensely complicated at first glance. But some are relatively easy to fix.

That doesn’t mean they will be cheap if someone else does the job. Replacing a hard drive is probably a minimum $250-300 job at a computer shop.

However, some jobs can be done by the average Joe or Jane. On a scale of 1 to 10 (where 10 should only be performed by certified technicians who have no less than three electronic gadgets on their belt), replacing memory is usually about a 4. Installing a new hard drive is tougher (about 6 or 7), but still do-able. Replacing a video card or internal modem is no more than a 2.

A word of caution: Static electricity can kill the circuitry inside your computer. Before you reach for anything inside that box, ground yourself by touching the metal computer frame.

Here are four common PC problems you may be able to fix by yourself:

1. You turn on the computer and nothing happens. No lights, no beeps, no fan noise. What is the first thing you do? Be sure the darn thing is plugged in!Even if you’re absolutely certain that it is connected, double check. Assuming that it is plugged in, you probably have a bad power supply. This is a metal box located in the top and back of the computer. It is usually held in by four screws and the power cable connects to it. A fan blows air out the back. A wiring harness exits the power supply inside the computer. Numerous power connectors are attached to the ends of the wires. These plug into drives, fans, and possibly other gizmos. The harness also will have connectors to the motherboard. It doesn’t matter which wire connects where, as long as the connector fits. When you open the computer, this mess of wiring can be very intimidating. Study it, and you’ll find it less mysterious. Note the connections in writing, if necessary. Disconnect the wires and remove the power supply. Take it to the computer store and get a replacement with the same wattage. Figure on spending $50-70.

2. The computer comes on, but nothing appears on your monitor. In other words, Windows never shows up. You may have a monitor problem. Try using another monitor you know is good on the computer and see if anything shows up on the screen. If the second monitor works, the first one is bad. Monitors are not worth repairing. Just buy a new one. Never open the back of a monitor to fix it. The capacitors inside monitors store electricity. You could be injured or even killed. If the screen is dark, it could be a video card problem. First, find the video card. This is a circuit board that fits into a slot in the motherboard. The cable from the monitor connects to the VGA (video graphics adapter) port, which sticks out through the back of the computer. If the VGA port is part of the motherboard, the video is built in. You can’t fix that. Otherwise, it will be part of the video card. Assuming you have a separate card, be sure it is firmly seated. The front end of the card can rise out of the slot inadvertently when the back end is screwed down to the computer frame. If you have a computer that is working perfectly, turn it off and remove the video card. Put the card that works in the problem computer. If the system works, you need a new card. If you don’t have an extra card to test your system, buy a cheap one ($30-50). If it doesn’t solve the problem, take it back. You can spend hundreds of dollars on a video card. But if you’re running business applications and surfing the Web, buy on price. The expensive stuff is for serious gamers.

3. If you regularly get the “Blue Screen of Death,” you may have a random access memory (RAM) problem. Note the message on the blue screen, especially the numbers. Check it in Microsoft’s Support Site. Also, put the text of the error message in a search engine and check the Internet. Assuming you can diagnose it, a memory problem is easy to fix. If you can’t find the diagnosis information you need online, you can try swapping out memory sticks from another computer. But that memory must be the same type. If all else fails, take the old memory to a computer store. The people there may be willing to test it. Sticks of memory go in slots near the microprocessor. They’re about four inches long. Remove the old memory and match it at the store. Memory prices are all over the map, depending on type and speed. Be sure you get the same type. When you press the new memory into the slot, you will probably have to use some force. The clips on each end will snap into place when the memory is seated properly.

4. If you boot up, and the computer cannot find the C: drive, you might have a bad hard drive. If you have another computer, swap hard drives to diagnose the problem. If your computer boots with the other drive, yours is probably bad. Sometimes, a reboot will work. Your drive might have enough life to spin up occasionally. If this works, transfer your data to another drive, pronto. According to techie lore, you can seal a nonworking drive in a bag and put it in a freezer overnight. That could shrink things enough to free them up. I’ve used this trick a few times and it’s worth a try. A regular backup regimen will save you in case of hard-drive failure, assuming you aren’t backing up to the same hard drive. If the drive is dead and you don’t have a backup, a computer shop may be able to save your data. Hard drives are cheap. You can get a replacement for less than $100. Get one boxed for retail, which will include instructions and any hardware needed. Your hard drive is in the front of your machine. It will be about the size of a paperback book and is probably held in by four screws, two on each side. Power and ribbon cables connect to the back. Put the new drive in and install it as the master. Reconfigure the old drive as the slave. The instructions that come with the new drive should explain that. Boot the computer and install Windows on the new drive. If you’re lucky, the computer will see the old drive (it will be D:). You can then transfer your data to the new drive. Replacing a hard drive is more difficult than the other operations. However, if you pay to have the work done, it may not be cost effective. You might be better off buying a new machine. So if you are adventuresome, and you have the time, changing the hard drive may be worthwhile.

Know your limitations

Some things may be beyond your ability. For instance, upgrading a microprocessor can be dicey. Even if a faster microprocessor will fit in your motherboard, you probably need to upgrade the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). This is done through a process called “flashing,” in which information is downloaded to change the BIOS. If flashing isn’t done correctly, the computer can be rendered useless. Leave that to the experts.

There are times when fixing a computer just isn’t worthwhile. New machines can be had for a couple hundred bucks. That might be all you need for business purposes. So, if you’re facing a $300 repair, maybe it’s time to look around. That repair probably won’t be the last.

After this column first appeared, I received a helpful note from a computer technician. He said businesspeople should be careful about buying inexpensive home machines. Business buyers probably need a better warranty, including next-day service and maybe a loaner. Also, you need some kind of backup mechanism-a CD burner, a DVD burner, a second hard drive, and so on. Saving money is good, but be sure you get what you need.

1. Vista upgrade hangs at 62%

Windows 7 can start causing problems before it’s even installed, as many people report their upgrade hangs forever at 62%. Which is annoying.

Reboot, and your PC should roll back to Windows Vista. You can then open the setup log file \$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log to view what happened. Microsoft say this is usually caused because the Iphlpsvc service has stopped responding, and just adding an environment variable to ignore it will fix the problem. Point your browser athttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/975253 for the fix.

If this doesn’t help (or your upgrade hangs at something other than 62%) then browse the setup log for other clues. And you might also try to boot and install from the Windows 7 disc, if possible, as that reduces the chance of any conflict with your existing Vista (or XP) setup.

INSTALL WINDOWS 7: Windows 7 upgrades are usually quick, but sometimes it doesn’t install at all

2. DVD drive not found

In some cases your DVD drive may not be found by Windows 7, even if it’s visible in the BIOS and using the standard driver.

The standard solution here is to run REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\, then delete both UpperFilters and LowerFilters in the right-hand pane (UpperFilters.bak and LowerFilters.bak entries can be ignored).

No change? Resetting the drive letter has worked for some. Click Start, type Disk Management and choose the “Create and format hard disk partitions” link. If your optical drive is visible here then right-click it, select Change Drive Letter and Paths, click Change and choose a new letter. If the drive is now visible in Explorer, then repeat the process to change the drive letter back; if it’s still not visible, reboot and it should appear.

3. Aero isn’t running

If Windows 7 isn’t looking its best – transparency has been turned off, say – then the Aero theme may not have been fully enabled on your system. Click Start, type Aero, choose the “Find and fix problems with transparency and other visual effects” link, and click Next to launch the Aero troubleshooting wizard. It’ll try to identify and resolve and problems. And if it doesn’t, then install the latest driver for your graphics hardware. That could be all your system needs.

Some Aero features may be disabled in the Registry, though. For example, if Aero Peek (the ability to make open windows transparent to display your desktop underneath) doesn’t work for you, then launch REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM and make sure EnableAeroPeek is set to 1, rather than 0.

NO AERO: Windows 7′s troubleshooting wizards will fix many display problems while you watch

4. Aero Snap irritations

Windows 7′s new ability to move and resize windows, all in one movement, can be a genuine productivity boost. But if you find windows moving around when you don’t expect it then Aero Snap is more of an annoyance than anything else, though at least it’s one you can disable in just a few seconds.

Launch Control Panel, click Ease of Access, and select either “Change how your mouse works” or “Change how your keyboard works”. Then browse down to the “Make it easier to manage windows” section, check “Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen”, click OK, and program windows now won’t go anywhere unless you specifically command it.

5. iPhone won’t sync in Windows 7

Irritated iPhone users are beginning to report major difficulties in getting their iPhone to sync with Windows 7 systems. Particularly 64-bit Windows 7 systems, based around the P55 chipset. The iPhone is usually (though not always) recognised, but iTunes then complains that it can’t connect to the unit because of an “unknown error”, usually (though again, not always) 0xE8000065.

Disabling USB power management appears to be one solution. Click Start, type DEVMGMT.MSC and press [Enter] to launch Device Manager, then click View > Devices By Type. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section of the tree, right-click each USB Root Hub entry in turn, select Properties > Power Management, and clear “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.

Reboot your PC after this tweak and try again. This works for some, but if you’re out of luck then check the Apple Discussions thread for other ideas.

SYNCING FEELING: iTunes on Windows 7 won’t always see, or sync with, your iPod

6. Windows 7 themes change your custom icons

Windows 7 has some spectacular new themes – there’s a great selection at the Microsoft site - but installing them can have one annoying side-effect. If you’ve previously changed a system icon like Computer or the Recycle Bin then that could disappear, replaced by the equivalent icon from the theme pack.

To prevent this, right-click an empty part of the desktop, select Personalize > Change Desktop Icons, clear the “Allow themes to change desktop icons” box and click OK. Your icons will now be preserved, and the only way to change them will be manually, from the same Desktop Icons dialogue.

7. Taskbar problems

We like the new Windows 7 taskbar, but many people seem less than impressed with the new approach to taskbar buttons, finding it difficult to tell at a glance whether an icon is a running application or a pinned shortcut. If this sounds like you then there’s an easy way to restore more standard taskbar buttons, though – right-click the taskbar, select Properties, and set Taskbar Buttons to “Never combine” or “Combine when taskbar is full”.

You can even restore the old Quick Launch toolbar in just a few clicks. Simply right-click the taskbar, click Toolbars > New Toolbar, type %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch in the folder box and click Select Folder. The Quick Launch toolbar should then reappear, and you can move and resize it to suit your needs.

STANDARD TASKBAR: Just a few seconds work and your taskbar has that retro look

8. Missing Explorer folders

Click Start > Computer in Windows 7 and you’ll find system folders like Control Panel and the Recycle Bin are no longer displayed in the left-hand Explore pane. This seems like a backward step to us, but there’s a quick solution. Click Tools > Folder Options, check “Show all folders”, click OK and all your top-level system folders will reappear.

9. Missing applets

Windows 7 installs quickly and takes up less hard drive space than you might expect, but in part that’s down to cheating – Mail, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery and other applets are no longer bundled with a standard Windows installation. Instead you must download the programs you need from theWindows Live Essentials site.

Installing Live Essentials will also get you potentially unnecessary extras, though, like an ActiveX control to help in uploading files to Windows Live SkyDrive. And the Windows Live Sign-In Assistant, which can be useful if you want to switch between multiple Windows Live accounts. If you have only one Windows Live account, and no plans to use Live SkyDrive, then these can safely be removed from the Control Panel Uninstall A Program applet.

TAKE YOUR PICK: You can install as many, or as few of the Live Essentials programs as you like

10. Too many minidumps

By default Windows 7 now keeps the last 50 minidump files (memory images saved when your PC crashes). If you’re keen on using dump files to troubleshoot crashes then this is good news, but if you’ve no interest in that kind of advanced debugging then minidumps are just a waste of your valuable hard drive space. In which case you should run REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl, and set MiniDumpsCount to 1. Windows will only now keep the last dump file and you’ll free up a little hard drive space.

11. HP Multifunction Printer problems

If you’ve an HP multifunction printer with its “Full Feature Software solution” or “Basic Driver solution” installed then, after upgrading to Windows 7, you may find the printer stops working. Press the buttons on the front of the printer and nothing will happen; launch the software manually and you’ll see reports that it can’t connect to your hardware.

The problem is that a few files and Registry entries have been lost in the migration to Windows Vista, and even reinstalling the original HP software won’t help. Fortunately there’s a new version of HP Solution Center that should get everything working again, though, and you can find out more about it at the HP support site.

12. Hidden extensions

Explorer’s default settings in Windows 7 hide file extensions, as well as system files and folders.

To fix this, launch Explorer and click Tools > Folder Options > View.

Clear the “Hide extensions for known file types” to show file extensions, reducing the likelihood that you’ll accidentally double-click on virus.txt.exe in future.

And as long as there are no novice users on your system who might go poking around in Explorer, we’d also choose to “Show hidden files and folders” as well as clear the “Hide protected operating system files” box. It’s often important to see these files when you’re troubleshooting, or following problem-solving instructions from someone else.

13. DVD audio issues

Windows 7 runs well even on old notebooks, say reviewers, and in general they’re right. But we have seen reports of problems, for example with DVD audio, where movie sound is either completely unintelligible or doesn’t appear at all.

Should anything similar happen to you then head off to Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound > Sound, right-click your current default playback device (it’ll have a green tick displayed) and select Properties.

Then click Advanced, clear any settings in the Exclusive Mode box and click OK. You’ve now ensured that older or badly-behaved drivers can’t take complete control of the speakers any more, and this alone will often be enough to get your system working again. (But if it doesn’t, installing new audio drivers is your next best option.)

14. Windows Live MovieMaker

For some bizarre reason Windows Live MovieMaker won’t let you import network files by default. Okay, so they’ll be large and may monopolise network traffic for a while, but shouldn’t that be your choice?

Anyway, a quick Registry tweak will solve this annoying problem. Simply run REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Movie Maker, add a DWORD value called AllowNetworkFiles and set it to 1: job done.

IMPORT NETWORK FILES: Network access is only a Registry tweak away

15. XP Mode doesn’t work

If you’ve ancient software that won’t work under Windows 7 then in theory you can use XP Mode, a virtual machine with an installation of Windows XP that should be more successful. In practice, however, it doesn’t always work out that way.

Problem 1 is XP Mode requires hardware support from the CPU. TheMicrosoft Hardware-Assisted Virtualization Detection Tool can check your system to see if it’s compatible.

Problem 2 is the feature must be enabled in the BIOS. Microsoft has some instructions, but essentially you just need to browse your BIOS setup program looking for an AMD-V, Intel VT or VIA VT virtualisation setting and ensure it’s turned on.

Unfortunately problem number 3 is that some laptop manufacturers have previously disabled this setting for “security” reasons. Sony Vaios had the feature turned off for a while, for instance, prompting some to recommend ways in which you can edit their firmware to restore the setting, although Sony seems to have restored it recently. If hardware virtualisation is turned off on your system then check with the manufacturer – a BIOS upgrade may fix the problem.

And if all else fails, just use a package like VirtualBox that doesn’t insist on hardware support. You will need to provide a licenced copy of XP (or whatever other version you want to use) to install on it, though.

WINDOWS 7 XP MODE: Good news – this CPU is up to the task of running XP Mode

16. Add Windows Media Center to AutoPlay options

Windows 7 includes Media Center, but for some strange reason you can’t choose it as an AutoPlay handler. The only standard program that can be launched to play DVD-Video discs, say, is Media Player, which seems an odd limitation.

Fortunately there’s no fundamental change that’s preventing this from working, it’s just that Windows 7 doesn’t contain the required Registry entries. If you’ve a Windows Vista PC to hand then you could export these yourself: just go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoplayHandlers and save all the keys and values beginning with EHome.

Windows expert Ramesh Srinivasan has done the hard work already, though, so it’s probably easier to download the .REG file from him. Take a look at Srinivasan’s Winhelponline to find out more.

17. Missing crash dump files

Impressive though Windows 7 is, it’ll crash sometimes, and if you’ve installed diagnostic software like the Windows debugging tools then you’ll want the crash dump file to hand for further investigations. And yet in some situations you’ll find the memory.dmp file never appears. So what’s going on?

First, click Start, right-click Computer and select Properties > Advanced System Settings > Startup and Recovery Settings. Make sure that “Write debugging information” is set to something other than “none”, and that “Dump file” is the default “%SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP”.

If that’s all correct then check your free hard drive space. If your system isn’t on a domain, and has less than 25GB free, then Windows 7 will no longer keep a crash dump file. If you’d like to change that, launch REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl, create a new DWORD value called AlwaysKeepMemoryDump, set it to 1, and in future the crash dump file will always be preserved.

18. Can’t disable hibernation

Windows 7 doesn’t make it easy to turn off hibernation, annoying if you never use it as you’ll permanently have a “hiberfil.sys” file taking up a sizeable portion of your hard drive. To rectify this situation, launch REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power, and set HibernateEnabled to zero.

19. Poor video quality

The new Windows 7 power plan settings affect more of your software than ever before. If you notice video playback quality seems poor, for instance, then click Start, type Power Options and click the Power Options link. Click Change Plan Settings for your currently selected plan, click Change Advanced Settings, expand the Multimedia Settings section and make sure “Playing video” is set to “Optimise performance”.

Alternatively, if you often play video on a laptop, then change the new setting to “Optimise performance” and you may see an improvement in battery life.

20. Where’s Software Explorer?

If you’ve ever played with Windows Defender on Vista then you’ll have probably noticed the Software Explorer feature, a very useful way to find out and control exactly what’s launched on your PC when Windows starts. So it’s a little annoying to see this has disappeared in the latest version, leaving you with only the aging MSCONFIG to control your startup programs.

We’d recommend you download and use Autoruns, then, instead. It’s rather more technical than Software Explorer, but nothing else provides quite as much useful detail on the add-ons and extensions you’ll be loading when Windows, Explorer and your browser are launched.

START UP: Autoruns shows all the programs that will load when your PC starts

21. Explorer navigation

The Windows 7 version of Explorer has partly disconnected its two panes, so if you’re double-clicking your way down a complex set of folders in the right-hand pane, the left hand tree won’t always expand to follow you.

This may improve performance a little, but it also means that you won’t always be able to see the complete folder structure unless you expand it manually, which on balance seems a bad idea. If you agree then click Organize > Folder and Search Options, check “Automatically expand to current folder”, and click OK to restore normal operations.

22. Windows Live Messenger and the system tray

Close Windows Live Messenger on Windows 7 and it’ll display its icon on the taskbar, chewing up useful application space, rather than in the system tray where many believe it belongs.

Fortunately there’s a very quick fix: right-click the shortcut to Windows Live Messenger, click Properties > Compatibility, check “Run this program in compatibility mode for” and choose “Windows XP (Service Pack 3)” from the list. Close Messenger and its icon should now appear in the system tray, just as you’d expect.

If you use Outlook as your email solutions provider, then there are chances that you face the Socket Error 10061 often. This error can put you in trouble, as you may not be able to read or send emails at the most critical of times. This error can also cause you to lose your valuable email data.

There is no need to panic because in this article, we tell you all that you need to know about this error and the ways in which you can fix this error.

What is the Socket error: 10061

Socket error 10061 is a common error and is caused because the destination server does not permit access and the programs on your system get confused, resulting in the error. Very often, this is caused due to a corrupt file in the registry of your computer. A registry is a large database where all the files, settings, options and any crucial computer data is stored. A registry plays a very vital role in a Window’s system, and its continual usage can cause errors and make the system slow.

Is there anything that you can do now?

Yes of course, it is very easy to overcome this problem. The first thing that you need to check is if your internet connection is working fine. If the internet connection is working fine, then you need to clean up the registry of your Windows. For this, the best solution is to use a registry cleaner. It is not advisable for you to clean the registry manually, as you may delete some very critical files that are needed for the smooth functioning of your system.

A registry cleaner is an automated program that will run through the registry of your computer, scan it and identify the files that are corrupt. The registry cleaner then displays these files to you and you can delete the files or instruct the registry cleaner to fix the files for you. If you run the registry cleaner on a weekly basis, then you can be assured of an error free email solution as well as a better performing system.

You can get rid of any unnecessary tension because of Socket error: 10061 and improve the performance in a moment.
